Dead to Sin

VERSE 1  Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin.

Dead to The Lusts of Flesh

VERSE 2-3  (2)so as to live the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. (3)For the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties and abominable idolatries.

The unconverted are entombed in dead flesh and unresponsive to God's living word. Their hearts are pulled through the lusts of the flesh toward lurking idolatries that promise to gratify those lusts. But believers are have been made free and equipped to turn from the ways of the flesh to God's ways.

Dead to the Judged World

VERSE 4-5  (4)In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same excesses of dissipation, and they malign you.(5)but they will give account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

God sees the unconverted as an unruly mob energized by the lusts of their flesh as they plunge headlong into the waters of the world's idolatries. In that darkness, believers shine as God's lights... In that emptiness, God's people spread their life as salt in the earth. But the spiritually dead revile the spiritually alive as 'strange' and the truth revealed by them as scornful.

Alive to God

VERSE 6   For the gospel has for this purpose been preached even to those who are dead, that though they are judged in the flesh as men, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God.

The Battle Ready Mind

VERSE 7-8a  The end of all things is near therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer above all
"The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray"(NIV )
"But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer"(KJV)

1 Peter 4:7

<---similar verses--->

Romans 13: 11-14

"The end of all things is near therefore"
Throughout scripture believers are exhorted to walk uprightly by appeals to various truths. Here Peter is appealing to God's coming judgment

 <---the motivation --->

Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed The night is almost gone, and the day is near.

"be of sound judgment"
The way God sees things is the way we are to see things. As we mature in Christ, we increasingly see the world in the light of God's word. The utmost in sound judgment is to see the world through 'word colored glasses'.

"sober spirit"
When we see the flesh and the world the way God sees them, we will be motivated to be prepared; especially because we know the enemy seeks a foothold in our flesh by which he might make us fall through the ways of the world.

<---the battle ready mind--->

Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.

God's Love in a Believer

VERSE 8b  keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.

.

Gifts for God's Glory

VERSE 9-11  (9)Be hospitable to one another without complaint. (10)As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. (11)Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

(9)"Be hospitable to one another without complaint"
To be effective, believers must be fellowshipping together, that is why hospitality is so important. Those with the gift of hospitality should realize how key that gift is for the building up of the body of Christ---Peter did.

(10)"As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God"

Our fervent love is to stretch out toward the saints---supporting them and building them up through our spiritual gifts.

(11)"Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies"
Peter summarizes the two main categories of gift ministries which were introduced to the church in Acts chapter six:

Preparation for Persecution

VERSE 12-16 (12)Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; (13)but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation. (14)If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. (15)Make sure that none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a troublesome meddler; (16) but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name. (17)For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?(18) AND IF IT IS WITH DIFFICULTY THAT THE RIGHTEOUS IS SAVED, WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE GODLESS MAN AND THE SINNER? (19) Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.

Jesus, our shepherd, leads us through a world where we will be persecuted for who we have become in Christ, just as He was persecuted, because the world only loves its own. Persecution is a fire that burns away the dross in our heart and mind that holds an attraction to the world. Persecution causes us to more fully trust our Shepherd, resulting in joy and heavenly rewards.

Eight things every believer should know about persecution

1) Those who follow Jesus should expect persecution

    (12a)Beloved, do not be surprised

"Remember the word that I said to you, 'A slave is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also." Jn 17:20

2) Persecution tests our faith like a furnace tests gold ---burning away the impurities

(12b)at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing

"After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you." 1 Peter 5:10

3) Persecution of believers by the world is the norm because the world loves its own and hates 'strangers from heaven'.

(12c)as though some strange thing were happening to you

"If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you." Jn 15:19

4) We have the priviledge to share in His conflicts with unrighteousness.

(13a)but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ

"If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you". Jn. 15:18 15:18

5) Two kinds of persecution

    a) Rejection by those who know us (ex friends, neighbors, relatives etc)
(14)If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

"Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me"
Matt.5:10-11 ["because the Spirit of God rests on them" and "for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" is basically saying the same thing---that being persecuted by the world shows that believers and those persecuting them are from two different worlds. Paul says the same thing in Phil.1:28-29]

    b) Persecution by those with authority over us, who normally only deal harshly with those who break moral laws.
(15-16)Make sure that none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a troublesome meddler; but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name
    .
"Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life." Rev 2:10

6) The reality of persecution should be a reminder that God's holy judgment on sin requires the pruning of chastisement of His children, but also the eternal banishment from God for those who have not accepted the gospel of Jesus. This should doubly motivate us to become lights on a hill---that we might not be lead into times of chastisement and that we would lead others to Christ by our saltiness.

(17)For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
(18)AND IF IT IS WITH DIFFICULTY THAT THE RIGHTEOUS IS SAVED,WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE GODLESS MAN AND THE SINNER?
[Peter references Prov. 11:31 to underscore verse 17 (both verses say the same thing) that God calls his people to be holy even as He is holy. For believers who do not heed the call to holiness, there is judgment of pruning and chastizement, sometimes severely. But for those who reject the gospel of His Son, it gets infinitely worse---entailing eternal separation from God]
"Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit." Jn 15:2

7) Great joy and rewards follow those who are persecuted for following Jesus.

(13b)keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation

"Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great..."  Matt 5: 11-12

8) Jesus, who created us, remains our faithful caring shepherd so we should remain faithful to Him.

(19)Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right. [God created us so He must know what he's doing by leading us to and through persecution]
"Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful." Jn. 14:27

"These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world." Jn. 16:33
